Upcoming Event & Supt. Blog
Hudson ISD Parents and Staff,
As my September edition to the Superintendent's Blog, I want to remind you of a very important and upcoming event. Previously, I alluded to a program that we feel will be very beneficial for parents, community members, faith-based organizations, and local authorities.
Unfortunately, our country, state, and local communities have seen an influx of substances that are readily available to our youth. Many of these substances are 'legally' sold at convenience stores and many parents are not aware of the harmful effects. Some of these products have the same effects (short and long-term) as illegal substances. If we do not educate ourselves, I can guarantee that we (our families) are more likely to become victims of this preventable danger. With the generous donation received from a Hudson ISD parent and the partnership with the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council (ADAC), we are excited to bring to our entire community the following program.
The "Tall Cop" program, officially known as "Tall Cop Says Stop," is an initiative aimed at educating communities about the dangers of drugs and drug-related issues. Launched by a law enforcement officer and national speaker, the program features engaging presentations that highlight the realities of drug use, trafficking, and its impact on individuals and communities.
Through a mix of personal stories, statistics, and interactive discussions, the program seeks to raise awareness, prevent substance abuse, and promote healthy choices among youth and adults. It often targets schools, community groups, and parents, providing resources and information to help them address these challenges effectively. The approachable style of the presenter makes the serious topic more relatable and impactful.
Why should you attend?
1) The program provides valuable insights into the current trends in drug use and the realities of substance abuse, equipping parents and community members with knowledge to better understand and address these issues.
2) It fosters open discussions between parents, students, and educators about drug-related topics, helping break down stigma and encouraging honest conversations about choices and consequences.
3) By educating adults, the program helps them recognize warning signs of substance abuse, enabling them to take proactive steps to support youths and intervene when necessary.
4) Bringing together parents, educators, and community members creates a unified front against drug use, promoting a supportive environment where everyone is invested in the well-being of young people.
5) Attendees gain access to valuable resources and tools that can be used at home or within the community to further promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles.
This program is FREE to attend, but you must be at least 18 years old (and not a current student) to attend. We want to be very careful not to over-educate our youth with the details of these topics. Some professionals may be able to obtain continuing education credits as outlined in the flyer below. This event is scheduled for October 16th, 2024 at the Lufkin Civic Center, but YOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE. A QR code is on the flyer to register. Please let us all work together, learn together, and prevent unnecessary outcomes among our youth. Together, we can make a difference. I look forward to seeing you there. Note: This is a community-wide event, not just a Hudson event. Anyone in the area is welcome to attend.
Also, note that the 9:00-Noon session is primarily for professionals seeking credit and additional tools, but parents are welcome to attend that session. The 5:30-6:45 session is geared more toward parents and general community members.
God bless,
Donny Webb, Superintendent
Hudson ISD
